What do I need to do before I begin my studies on the New Zealand Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 6) MEC3 programme?

Please make sure you read the following if you have received an unconditional offer document for the New Zealand Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 6) MEC3 programme.

You need to provide us with copies of your STCW Basic Training certificates:

  • STCW Elementary First Aid (unlimited)
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (unlimited)
  • STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (current)
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (current)
  • STCW Seafarers Security Awareness (unlimited)

Please email these certificates to iminz@nmit.ac.nz as soon as possible.

Training Record Book

Completion of the marine engineering Training Record Book (TRB) is required by NMIT for entering this programme of study as it relies on your prior knowledge of working in a Ship Engine Room to enable the shortened deliver.  Verification of your sea time will be completed by Maritime New Zealand.  Acceptance on the programme is not a guarantee that your Sea-time will be recognised by Maritime New Zealand as sufficient for the Certificate of Competence.

You are strongly advised to complete a Seafarer certificate pre-assessment from MNZ if there are any concerns over Seatime eligibility prior to arrival at NMIT.  This is currently a free service (as of 2021).

You will need to present your TRB book to the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) examiner prior to your final Oral exam which is held at the end of your Diploma.  TRB books can be purchased from ICS-Shipping organisation – they offer free international postage.  https://publications.ics-shipping.org/single-product.php?id=16

  • Onboard Training Record Book for Engineer Cadets – International Shipping Federation and revised Officers in Charge of an Engineering Watch (Engine Cadets) (preferred TRB)
  • Training and Assessment Record Book for Assistant Engineer Officer – GlobalMET
  • Engineering Training Record Book – Merchant Navy Training Board (UK)
  • On Board Training and Assessment Record Book: ‘Foreign Going Voyages’ (Officer in charge Engineering Watch) – Director General of Shipping (India)
  • Training and Assessment Record Book (TARB) – Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore

Seafarers Medical Certificate

You will need to provide us with a current Seafarers medical certificate (not more than 2 years since the date of issue) at the time of attending the STCW Advanced Fire Fighting course.

Maritime New Zealand information

After completing your Diploma in Marine Engineering Class 3 here at NMIT IMINZ, you will need to make an application to Maritime New Zealand for your STCW MEC3 Certificate of Competency.

The cost of your MNZ application for MEC3, and for a STCW Basic tanker endorsement, is to be paid by yourself at the time of your MNZ application.  These fees are additional to the NMIT IMINZ Diploma fees. 

Seatime

NMIT IMINZ is not permitted to assess your seatime.  This is done by MNZ when you apply for your STCW MEC3 Certificate of Competency when you have complete the Diploma.  MNZ offer an optional pre-assessment of your sea time service, this form is available at this link (subject to change by MNZ) https://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/Commercial/Certification/documents/Pre-assessment-application-form.pdf.  If you are unsure about the validity of your seatime, then we recommend you use this service.

Laptops

All students are requested to Bring Your Own Device - laptop, iPad, tablet to enable use of electronic resources in class.

Accommodation

NMIT can assist you with accommodation.  Our preferred student accommodation provider is Nikau Apartments www.nikauapartments.co.nz.   They are situated on campus.  You must book your accommodation directly.
