Driving on New Zealand Roads and converting my overseas drivers licence to a New Zealand licence?

You can drive in New Zealand if you have a valid overseas licence or driver permit, however there are criteria that must be met.

See the New Zealand Transport Agency website for full information.

  • You can drive on your overseas driver's licence for a maximum period of 12 months from the date you arrive in New Zealand
  • If you will be in New Zealand for more than a year, you will need to obtain a New Zealand driver licence.
  • You can apply to convert your overseas licence if it is still current or has expired less than 12 months ago.

To convert your overseas driver licence to a New Zealand driver licence, you must apply at a driver licensing agent. For further information, please see the New Zealand Transport Agency website.
