When can I do my block course for Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL)? - HOW DO I / Programme areas / Maritime - NMIT Support

When can I do my block course for Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL)?

How is the programme structured?

You need to complete online course work before you attend the block course.  It takes appropriately 19 weeks to complete the online course work.  The block course is 5 weeks long.  You need to attend the block course in person in Nelson.

What intake do I need to enrol on?

See Intake Dates with Block Course Options below.  Choose a block course that you are able to attend and then apply from that intake.

For example:

I want to attend the block that is scheduled in July 2024.  The July 2024 block course is available on five flexi intakes (August 2023, September 2023, October 2023, November 2023 and December 2023).   Pick one of these flexi intakes and then apply.

How do I enrol?

You can apply online.  Please select an intake where you will be able to attend one of the block course options from that intake.  See Intake Dates with Block Course Options below.

Once your application has been received, we will check to see if you meet the entry requirements.  If you meet the entry requirements, we will email you a Confirmation of Enrolment letter.  This letter will state your programme start and end dates.  To accept your place, you need to sign and return the last page of this letter or confirm your place online.  Once you have confirmed your place, we will send you an invoice and instructions on how to access your online course work.

I cannot access my online course work, what do I do?

If you cannot access your course work or you are having problems logging in, please email SRL.Coordination@nmit.ac.nz as soon as possible.  Please note that you once you are fully enrolled and you have not attempted any online course work and/or do not attend a block course within the programme dates (as stated on your letter), you are not eligible for a refund.   Refunds are only available within the cancellation period.

When do I pay for my programme?

Payment is required before your programme start date.  We will send you an invoice once you have confirmed your place.

When can I cancel my enrolment?

Please email enrolments@nmit.ac.nz within 10% after the programme start date (approximately one month if you are enrolled on a flexi intake).

Which intake do I need to enrol on to receive an allowance from StudyLink?

The flexi intakes are not eligible for an allowance.  We need to set up a special intake that covers 19 weeks of online course work as well as the 5 week block course.  Total duration of the programme will be 24 weeks.  Please email your request to enrolments@nmit.ac.nz and include the block course dates you want to attend.

What do I need to do before I attend the block course?

Prior to attending the block course, you need to complete the online course work and your Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Training Record Book.  Please download the training record book here.

I have already completed some components of this qualification (programme), do I need to do them again?

If you already hold a radio certificate (MROC) and/or have a current first aid certificate you may not need to attend these courses.  Please email copies to SRL.Coordination@nmit.ac.nz so we can access these certificates for recognition of prior learning.  If you are awarded recognition and you have paid your fees, we will refund you the course costs.  Please provide us with copies before you confirm your place on this programme.
