Can I park my car on campus in Nelson? - HOW DO I / On campus / Parking and Transport - NMIT Support

Can I park my car on campus in Nelson?

Are you a learner at NMIT? If so, you can park your car in the campus car park where your programme is delivered.

Please note: Car parks aren't guaranteed and are accessed on a 'first-come, first-served' basis.

Parking Permits at Nelson Campus

From 2024 NMIT | Te Pūkenga will no longer be issuing parking permits (permanent and temporary) for learners.

The Enrolments Team will be entering vehicle registration details directly onto the Parking Enforcement Services website.

Learners will need to provide the Enrolments Team with their vehicle registration details preferably at the same time they are collecting their student ID card.  Please note, that the dates will be specified on the Parking Enforcement Services website and will match the start and end date of their enrolment.

Learners studying night classes are not required to provide the Enrolments Team with their vehicle registration details as the car parks are not monitored after 5.00 pm.

Learners enrolled on daytime short courses/visitors who wish to park their vehicle will need to email enrolments@nmit.ac.nz with the following details:

  • Licence plate details
  • Driver name
  • Mobile number
  • Start date
  • Expiry date
  • Reason

Parking infringements

Parking is monitored and infringements for failure to follow parking rules may incur a $85.00 infringement.

Richmond Campus learners

If you are a Richmond Campus learner, you do not need to provide your licence plate details.  If you need to park at Nelson Campus to access support services, you will need to provide the Enrolments Team with the following:

  • Licence plate details
  • Driver name
  • Mobile number
  • Start date
  • Expiry date
  • Reason

Overnight stays and camping

No overnight stays, or camping, in any vehicle self-contained or non-self-contained, is permitted in NMIT car parks. The local Councils have information on where freedom camping is allowed in their region and other camping options. Please contact SANITI to discuss your situation if this affects you as they may have options for assistance.

On-street parking

In Nelson, there are also Nelson City Council (NCC) parking areas in the residential neighbourhood around campus.  Some NCC parks display designated parking times. Due to parking pressures in Nelson, both NMIT and NCC monitor their car parking areas and infringement tickets are issued to those not abiding by the rules. Avoid getting fines by being aware of the NMIT parking rules that are displayed at all NMIT car park entrances or using alternative transport methods.

Bicycle racks, bus timetables and other parking options

NMIT also has several bicycle racks and the NBus timetable is worth checking out for cheap bus fares around the city and as far out as Richmond, they even have an iOS app! There are also a few private car parks, including the Masonic Lodge on Nile Street, where for a fee you can park all day on weekdays.

Plan your travel to get to classes on time without any stress.
