What do I wear to Graduation?

We make it easy to look your best on the day by hiring graduation regalia on your behalf from the Nelson Federation of Graduate Women and Nelson Soroptimists. 

By attending the ceremonies, you will be asked to wear the following: 

Postgraduate graduands 

Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision 

Either regalia of your previous qualification or an NMIT Gown, an NMIT Diploma Stole and an optional Trencher. You will need to specify what your previous qualification is and where you received it if you wish to attend in previous regalia. 

Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture 

Gown, Hood and a Stole. 

Postgraduate Diploma in Business Enterprise 

Gown, SIT Hood and a Stole. 

Bachelor graduands 

Gown, Hood and a Trencher (trenchers are compulsory as you are to be capped on stage) 

Diploma graduands 

Gown and a Stole. 

Graduate Diploma 

Gown and a Hood. 

Certificate graduands 

Formal clothing. 

Regalia hire costs 

Gown $35.00 

Hood $20.00 

Stole $10.00 (A free Stole will be issued to Postgraduate Diploma graduands). 

Trencher $20.00 

Regalia Payment 

Please remember that you need to pay for your regalia by 16 November so we can reserve  it for you.  

You can pay online after completing the application to graduate form or in person by cheque, cash or by EFTPOS, Visa or MasterCard at the Information & Enrolment Centre in A Block - Nelson Campus. If you are in Marlborough you can pay at the main desk on campus. Please note, a surcharge of 1.5% of the value of the transaction applies to manual credit card payments (in person).

Or you can pay by bank transfer. Our account is BNZ 02-0704-0190770-003. If paying online or via bank transfer please use reference 'Regalia’ and include 'your name or student ID number’ in the details. 

About your regalia 

NMIT does not permit you to wear more than one hood at a time and you should wear the regalia appropriate to the award you are receiving. However, you are welcome to embellish your regalia with garments of honour from your cultural tradition, such as a korowai or ta'ovala if you wish. 

Non Return of Regalia 

You must return your regalia by the times specified here

If it is returned wet or damaged you may incur extra costs.  You will be responsible for the full cost of the replacement of the regalia if not returned.  The costs are: 

Gown $445.00 

Trencher $100.00 

Diploma stole $40.00 

Hood $165.00
